At Bondi Gym, we’ve always been big on community… it is something we have in spades and are always in appreciation of, which is super wonderful.
What is community?
Wiki says, a community is a small or large social unit (a group of people) who have something in common. Durable relations that extend beyond immediate genealogical ties also define a sense of community. People tend to define those social ties as important to their identity, practice, and roles in social institutions like family, home, work, government, society, or humanity, at large.
I don’t think Michael or I ever really planned to build a gym business, instead, we focused on building a wellness community. It was a goal we envisioned over 15 years ago, and the gym, well it was a means of getting there. Some might think of this as crazy talk, but it works for us.
So why am I talking about community you ask yourself?
Recently, we gave you the Keys to the Gym. That was only one part of the bigger picture. Over the next couple of months you’ll see more and more of our community based initiatives that will make your fitness environment not only uber-sleek to work out in, but, will also impart an even greater sense of belonging and well-being.
Some months ago we started imagining with our Super Local neighbour (behind the black door on Ebley St) – SUPERLOCALSTUDIO, what it would be like to create a space that not only helped people to be physically fit strong and healthy but also embodied a mechanism for emotional recharge and social change.
So our thoughts turned into project hART.
To communicate what we are doing, it’s important to firstly understand the benefits of Art Therapy. Our second definition for this blog – Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
At Bondi Gym, we see art as a powerful tool for holistic wellness and the hART project as an extension of an art for wellness philosophy / movement, and Bondi Gym, as a gallery to express local visions and encourage community good health, both creatively and physically.
So if you’re wondering what’s with all the black paint, shiny steel and night club-esq look of your gym, it’s just the next phase of hART – an evolving community wellness project.
In the coming weeks and months you will see the gym transformed into an entire visual work, including art based feature walls, an updated reception and welcome / gathering area, workshops, featured artist, external outings, community herb garden, maybe even an event or two in our new look gym, and fingers crossed, with your help, we might even pick up an award for Waverley’s Best and Brightest business in 2018.
So here’s to a little hART…
I hope you love the experience of feeling inspired by it as much as we love bringing it to you.
Huge hugs and a hART felt thank you to collaborator and awesome human being, Liane Rossler of SUPERLOCALSTUDIO – gym member, friend, local. Without whom, hART, would have only ever remained a thought.
